Of course the very best Schnucks is in Ladue. You'll notice that throughout this collection it seems like the better grocery stores are in neighborhoods with more money. (Shocking, right?) But it’s undeniable that the Schnucks on Clayton Road right by Plaza Frontenac is the best one in the St. Louis area. The parking lot isn’t always easy to pull out of, but everything else about it is perfect. It’s small and has low ceilings and feels more like a Straub’s than a Schnucks. Walking into it feels like a warm embrace. Everything is exactly where it should be and the small aisles feel cozy and nice. The Schnucks in Ladue just feels like home.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS IN THE CITY

Schnucks Arsenal
5055 Arsenal Street

Everyone’s favorite Schnucks in the city is the Schnucks on Arsenal. Located near The Hill, this Schnucks sells many locally-produced items from the neighborhood and has a wider selection of cheeses and Italian items than other local Schnucks locations. There’s a CVS inside this spot, too, and the people who work there are very friendly and helpful. The place is always clean and well-stocked and the produce is fresh. Pre-pandemic you could could find a live music here on the weekends and lots of samples to try. But there are still wonders to find here now: If you’re in the parking lot at just the right time, you can catch a beautiful sunset view.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS WEST OF THE RIVER

Schnucks Harvester Square

Don't let the busted "H" in the Schnucks sign fool you, this is the golden Schnucks of St. Charles. Perhaps a hidden gem, this Schnucks is tucked into a corner of a badass strip mall: A Dollar General, GreatClips, thrift store and more will handle a weekend's worth of errands in one trip. This Schnucks is smaller than others on the list, but the phrase "tiny but mighty" comes to mind. Well-stocked and quiet, you can find what you're looking for with ease and don't have to worry about running into the college kids that frequent the First Capitol Schnucks. It does lack some of the perks the other stores possess, but a CVS pharmacy and full grocery will satisfy those who prefer a no-frills grocery experience.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS FOR EASY SHOPPING

Schnucks Crestwood

This is one of the nicest Schnucks locations in town. It’s older, but comfortably so. Even if you’ve never been to this location, you can walk in and find exactly what you were seeking. This is one of those Schnucks locations that is split down the middle, offering the fresh stuff on one side of the store and the packaged stuff on the other. It also has lots of great flower and balloon gift options. This location has enough updates to make it feel modern but it still has a nice broken-in feeling. It’s like an old pair of jeans that still fit you just right.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS FOR A FANCY EXPERIENCE

Schnucks Kirkwood

This Schnucks location just got a huge makeover and everybody is loving it. The new store style debuted just a couple of months ago and it looks way cooler (even on the outside) than this picture from a couple of years ago shows. The redesigned store includes a massive food call, a retail area and is just a cool place to hang out. The store sells local products, so it’s a great place to pick up a gift. And the food hall offers ready-made food from local restaurants, which is great news for people who always get hungry while they’re shopping. If you just want to pop into a Schnucks and grab something quickly, though, this might not be the store for you. The Kirkwood Schnucks is a place to visit when you don’t just want groceries, but an experience.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS FOR GROWN-UP VIBES

Schnucks Chesterfield

This little Schnucks location is just perfect. It’s an older-style store, but sometimes there’s just no need to try to improve on a design. Everything is exactly where it should be, the selection is great, the people are nice and there are never long lines. Even the parking lot is low-stress. This location just feels grown up and easy. It gets an A+ in our book.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS TO EXPLORE NEW PRODUCTS

Schnucks Des Peres

This is another Schnucks location that recently had an update. This store is big and super modern, but it’s still easy to navigate and to slip in and out quickly if that’s your goal. But if you’re not in a rush, it’s a cool store to just hang out in enjoying the clean feeling and exploring new products.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS FOR KOSHER FOOD

Schnucks Ladue

Don’t be shocked: The Ladue Schnucks is a dream. The cheese selection is the bomb and this store, located at 170 and Ladue Road behind the Old Navy and the Barnes & Noble is a hidden gem. It’s also the Schnucks with the best kosher food selection in town.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS 24 HOURS A DAY

Schnucks Hampton Village
60 Hampton Village Plaza

This Schnucks location at the corner of Hampton Avenue and Chippewa Street is one of the most high-traffic grocery stores in the area. It’s located right across the street from the only Target in the city, making it an easy stop for busy moms trying to get it all done and get it all done quickly. It’s also open 24 hours a day so it’s a great place to hit up if you need cough syrup in the middle of the night. This Schnucks is split up in a unique way, too, with all of the fresh food in one half of the store and all of the packaged items in the other half. But the biggest perk of this Schnucks location is new: There’s now a Ross Dress For Less practically next door to it so make sure to bring your shopping bags and your credit card.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS TO RECLAIM YOUR YOUTH

Schnucks Richmond Center
6600 Clayton Road

This is a great Schnucks. Located in Clayton, it’s a favorite grocery-gathering location for students from Washington University. It also has a very good beer selection. (Coincidence?) It gets a lot of traffic but never feels too busy and it’s always selling cool seasonal stuff like bundles of wood and kiddie pools that the college kids scoop up and bring to parties. The vibe here is young and fun and grabbing your groceries is a breeze.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS TO SEE SOMETHING UNEXPECTED

Schnucks Brentwood

This Schnucks has a great selection and premium produce, but the most exciting thing about it is that you might get a glimpse of Austin Calzada a.k.a. the “Unicycle Guy.” He rides in the area through rain and snow and has been a huge source of inspiration for us since we wrote about him a few years back. Brentwood Schnucks should sell t-shirts with his picture on them.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS FOR WEIRDOS

Schnucks Webster Groves

This Schnucks is pretty small, but not so small that it’s an issue. It’s just cozy in a really nice way. Serving Webster weirdos for decades, this Schnucks has everything that you want and a whole lot of things you didn’t know that you wanted, either. The cheese selection is awesome, for example, but this Schnucks has something that none of the others have: A huge-ass hummus selection. Seriously. Every type of hummus you could ever imagine is sold at this schnucks. Instead of just a couple of Sabras to choose from, there are all brands with all types of flavorings and textures. If hummus is your bag, make a special trip to Webster Schnucks.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS TO AVOID CROWDS

Schnucks Gravois

This Schnucks isn’t particularly special. In fact, it’s just an average Schnucks, really. But it does have one advantage: This place is always empty. Though it’s located just down the road from the bustling Hampton Avenue Schnucks, this location has been all but forgotten about by the masses, leaving you to feel like you have the place to yourself in comparison.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS TO GRAB A QUICK LUNCH

Schnucks Downtown

You know, we’re not even sure if this should count as a proper Schnucks location, but we’re super glad that it exists. The Schnucks Culinaria downtown serves one particular purpose, but it serves it so well. Designed as a place to feed hungry people who work downtown quickly, it’s one of the best (and quickest) places to grab a single-serving meal and go. And when you’re downtown for jury duty and you get a break for lunch but you’re pressed for time and the lines at the nearby cafes are out the door, this Schnucks will get you fed in a hurry.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS FOR SENIOR SHOPPERS

Schnucks Kehrs Mill

This older-style Schnucks feels more like a Dierbergs in the best way. The selection is large but the space is intimate, with a lower ceiling that makes it feel cozy. It also seems like nobody is ever in a rush at this Schnucks location, giving it a nice vibe inside and making it feel like a more comfortable option for senior shoppers.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS FOR FRIENDLY STAFF

Schnucks Ferguson
49 Florissant Road

This Schnucks location is tiny but mighty. The people who work here are great and super-helpful. It’s also a great spot to visit for international foods and seasonings. There are many Schnucks locations in north county but this is definitely one of the best.

THE BEST SCHNUCKS FOR PEOPLE-WATCHING

This is a real workhorse Schnucks. It’s not the best but it’s far from the worst. It is, however, known as the Schnucks to visit when you’re in the mood to people-watch. It has a real “People of Walmart” vibe. You just never know what you’ll see inside or outside of here. It’s also a great spot to post up in the parking lot to watch fireworks from nearby Ritenour High School.

THE WORST SCHNUCKS FOR VIBES

Schnucks Loughborough
1020 Loughborough Drive
St. Louis, MO 63111

You can get everything you need at this Schnucks but it just feels weird in there. The vibes are all off. This is another Schnucks store that feels like it’s maybe secretly a different chain like Shop ‘n Save or something. The aisles just feel like a scene in a scary movie or something. Also, the parking lot is always crazy because it’s in that Loughborough Commons parking lot with the Lowe’s and the Starbucks where apparently no driving laws apply. This is the Schnucks where you’re most likely to get hit by a harried contractor while you’re sipping your latte.

THE WORST SCHNUCKS FOR A QUICK VISIT

Schnucks Grandview

If you want to go to Schnucks and you also want an opportunity to stare at your phone for an hour in public, visit this Schnucks because the lines are always very, very, very, very, very long. Very.

THE WORST SCHNUCKS TO SPEND ANY TIME IN

Schnucks Maplewood

It doesn’t even feel like this Schnucks is a Schnucks. This Schnucks used to be a Shop ‘n Save and it shows. It’s not set up like a normal Schnucks. It’s not clean like most Schnucks. It’s cold and terrible and the vibes are all off. There is one cool thing about it, though. On Google Maps, you can see a detailed map of the store, which will make it easier to plan you trip so you can get out of there as fast as possible.
