Lafayette Park is a 30-acre historic gem in St. Louis. It is one of the first public parks in the city and was dedicated in 1851. The park is named after Marquis de Lafayette, a popular hero in the American Revolution who visited St. Louis in 1825.
The 19th century saw Lafayette Park in its prime as a hotspot for recreational activities including concerts, picnicking, cruising the main lake in Swan boats, strolling. and more.
In 1896, a devastating tornado came across St. Louis and went directly through Lafayette Park causing severe damages. Since then, restoration and preservation have continued to keep the park open and thriving.
The park still has much character and beauty. Today people still do similar activities in the park as they did in the 19th century, with the exception of concerts and Swan Boat rides.
