Outraged St. Louis Residents Take to the Streets Against Immigration Policies

Young and old gathered on the steps on the Old Courthouse downtown Thursday afternoon to protest and march against the ICE practices that separate immigrant children from their families in detention centers. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., participants shared their stories about immigration and their families. The group then marched down Market Street to the Thomas F. Eagleton United States Courthouse. This march was organized by Families Belong Together, along with St. Louis resident Jeanine Molloff. Many gave speeches that ended in either tears or encouraging shouts from the crowd that they are supported by this community. In a speech Molloff gave to the crowd, she expressed her sadness and disgust with these practices and said “this can’t be a new normal.” Along with adults, many children were present with their families to show their support with handmade signs and chants. Chants included “silence is violence” and “touch one, touch all.” -- Text and photos by Lexie Miller
